7-Day Londorossi Route Explore Kilimanjaro Through the Quiet Western Approach
- Professional Mountain Guides

Overview
The Londorossi Route offers a scenic and rewarding approach to Mount Kilimanjaro, beginning on the western side of the mountain before joining the southern circuit. Compared with some of Kilimanjaro's more frequently used routes, the Londorossi approach provides a quieter start, beautiful forest scenery, and a gradual transition into the high-altitude landscapes of the mountain.
The route passes through dense rainforest, moorland, volcanic landscapes and the dramatic alpine desert before reaching the summit of Uhuru Peak. From the second day onward, the trail connects with the Lemosho/Machame side of the mountain, allowing climbers to experience some of Kilimanjaro's most impressive scenery while following a well-established acclimatization profile.
One of the highlights is the opportunity to experience the spectacular Shira Plateau, surrounded by ancient volcanic formations and expansive views toward Kibo. As the route progresses, trekkers encounter distinctive landmarks including Lava Tower, Barranco Wall and the high-altitude terrain surrounding Barafu Camp.
Londorossi is an excellent choice for trekkers looking for a quieter beginning, varied scenery and a carefully paced 7-day Kilimanjaro climbing experience.

Trip Features
Trip Itinerary
After breakfast at your hotel, your ETA team will collect you and drive approximately three hours to Londorossi Gate, where the mountain registration and park entry procedures are completed. While your guide and mountain crew handle the necessary arrangements, you will have an opportunity to prepare for the trek. Your luggage and equipment will be weighed and organized before the climb begins.
From the gate, the trail takes you through the beautiful western side of Kilimanjaro before reaching the starting point of today's hike. The relatively short walking distance allows you to settle into the mountain environment while beginning your acclimatization. You will spend the night at Shira I Camp, surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of the Shira Plateau.
Habitat: Heath & Moorland
Today you cross the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the most distinctive landscapes on Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail moves across open grassland and volcanic terrain, with views changing as you gain elevation. The route passes through striking volcanic rock formations, and depending on conditions you may encounter birds and small mountain animals along the way.
You will also pass near Cathedral Point, an elevated area offering impressive views across the surrounding plateau, before continuing toward Shira II Camp, where you will spend the night. The day's gradual elevation profile contributes to your acclimatization before the higher sections of the climb.
Habitat: Moorland
Today is an important acclimatization day as the trail takes you significantly higher before descending to your overnight camp. The route begins across the upper reaches of the Shira Plateau, with increasingly dramatic volcanic scenery surrounding you. You gradually approach Lava Tower, one of Kilimanjaro's prominent volcanic formations, reaching approximately 4,600 metres above sea level.
After spending time at this higher elevation, the trail descends toward Barranco Camp. This classic Kilimanjaro strategy of "climb high, sleep low" gives your body an opportunity to adapt to the increasing altitude. As you approach Barranco, the landscape changes dramatically, with giant lobelia and other high-altitude vegetation creating an impressive contrast against the volcanic slopes of Kibo.
Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, the day's trek begins with the spectacular Barranco Wall rising above camp. The trail climbs the Great Barranco Wall, a dramatic volcanic feature formed on the southeastern slopes of Kibo. Although the wall looks imposing from camp, the established trail provides a manageable route with your experienced ETA mountain crew assisting you through the more challenging sections.
After reaching the top, you continue through a series of valleys and ridges while enjoying impressive views of Kibo and the surrounding alpine landscape. The trail eventually descends into the Karanga Valley before climbing again toward Karanga Camp, your home for the night. This shorter trekking day provides valuable time for acclimatization and preparation for the higher elevations ahead.
Habitat: Desert Zone
Today you continue toward Barafu Camp, the high-altitude base from which you will make your summit attempt. The trail climbs gradually through the alpine desert, where vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and the environment more rugged. Along the way, you can enjoy expansive views across the mountain and the surrounding landscape.
After reaching Barafu Camp, your guides will help you settle in and prepare for the summit attempt. This is an important rest and preparation period, so the afternoon is kept relatively relaxed. You will have an early dinner before getting some rest. Your summit climb begins around midnight, so conserving your energy is essential.
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today is the summit day and the biggest physical challenge of your Kilimanjaro adventure. You will begin the climb around midnight, following the trail slowly into the darkness. The pace is deliberately steady, allowing you to conserve energy while your guides monitor your progress and help you manage the altitude.
As dawn approaches, you will reach Stella Point, located on the crater rim at approximately 5,739 metres. From here, you continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres (19,341 ft). Standing at Uhuru Peak is the defining moment of your Kilimanjaro climb. Take time to celebrate, capture photographs and appreciate the incredible views from the Roof of Africa.
After the summit, you descend toward Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down toward Millennium Camp or Mweka Camp, depending on the final itinerary and mountain conditions. A warm meal and well-earned rest await you at camp.
Habitat: Arctic Zone → Alpine Desert → Moorland
After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest. The landscape changes dramatically as you lose altitude, with the dry alpine environment gradually giving way to dense vegetation and forest. The descent provides a refreshing contrast to the barren landscapes encountered during the summit section.
Eventually, you reach Mweka Gate, where you complete the mountain exit procedures and receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate. After saying goodbye to your mountain crew, your ETA transfer vehicle will collect you and take you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Your 7-day Londorossi Route adventure comes to an end with memories of reaching the Roof of Africa.
