The Northern Circuit Route is the longest and one of the most scenic paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a unique 360-degree experience around the mountain. Known for its exceptional acclimatization profile, this 8-day trek provides climbers with the highest success rates thanks to its gradual ascent and lower daily elevation gains.
This route begins on the western side of Kilimanjaro and follows a lesser-traveled path around the mountain’s northern slopes, allowing trekkers to enjoy unparalleled solitude and panoramic views not seen on other routes. With its extended duration, the Northern Circuit allows for ample time to adapt to altitude, making it ideal for those who want to minimize risks while maximizing the overall experience.
Though physically demanding due to its length, the Northern Circuit is well-suited for adventurers seeking a diverse, immersive, and highly rewarding journey to Uhuru Peak. From the rich biodiversity of the rainforest to the stark beauty of alpine landscapes, climbers will encounter a stunning array of ecosystems before reaching the summit at sunrise, standing atop Africa’s highest point.

Tulivu has always been in our hearts, even though opening a boutique hotel wasn’t something we initially envisioned. Our passion for hosting family and friends, creating unforgettable experiences, and sharing fine dining brought us so much joy over the years. Eventually, we realized this warmth and hospitality could be shared with others. That’s when the idea for Tulivu Kilimanjaro Retreat and Campsite was born.

Altitude: 2,360 m to 2,820 m
Distance: 6 km | Time: 3–4 hours
Begin your adventure at Lemosho Gate, where you’ll complete registration before continuing with a short drive to the trailhead. The trek kicks off through lush montane rainforest, alive with the sounds of colobus monkeys, tropical birds, and vibrant flora. The trail is well-shaded and climbs gradually, allowing for a smooth adjustment to the altitude. After 3–4 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp), set beneath towering trees. Settle in for your first night on Kilimanjaro with a warm meal and evening briefing.
Altitude: 2,650m to 3,610m
Distance: 8 km | Time: 5–6 hours
You’ll leave the forest zone and enter the heath and moorland landscape, characterized by volcanic rock, lobelias, and giant senecios. The trail ascends steadily with stunning views of Shira Ridge and Mount Meru in the distance. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp, set on the western side of the Shira Plateau. After lunch and some rest, you can take a short acclimatization hike nearby before settling in for dinner and an overnight stay under the crisp mountain air.
Altitude: 3,610 m to 4,200 m
Distance: 12 km | Time: 5–7 hours
Set out across the sweeping expanse of the Shira Plateau, a high-altitude desert that offers one of Kilimanjaro’s most striking landscapes. The trail climbs gradually through open alpine meadows and volcanic rock formations, revealing incredible views of Mount Meru in the distance and the rugged beauty of the western Kilimanjaro massif. As you ascend, the terrain becomes more barren and remote. Your final destination is Moir Hut, a quiet campsite tucked beneath the Lent Hills. For those feeling strong, an optional hike up the hills provides added acclimatization and unforgettable views.
Altitude: 4,200m to 4,020m
Distance: 12 km | Time: 5–7 hours
The trail leads you on a scenic climb out of the Moir Valley and over a ridge, offering panoramic views of the plains north of Kilimanjaro. You’ll descend slightly and continue around the mountain’s northern slopes to Buffalo Camp. This quiet area provides a unique perspective of the mountain rarely seen by climbers on other routes. The terrain is mostly alpine desert with sparse vegetation. After lunch, rest and enjoy the view across the border into Kenya.
Altitude: 4,020m to 3,850m
Distance: 8 km | Time: 5–6 hours
Today’s trail continues east across the northern slopes with a series of gradual ascents and descents. The landscape remains open and quiet, with the occasional sighting of large birds or antelope. You’ll arrive at Third Cave Camp by early afternoon, where the air is thinner but manageable. This camp sits in a dry, rugged area beneath the looming peak of Kibo. Spend the afternoon resting or taking a short acclimatization hike with your guide.
Altitude: 3,850m to 4,750m
Distance: 5 km | Time: 4–5 hours
The climb today leads steadily up through the alpine desert to School Hut, your final camp before the summit. The trail offers sweeping views across the Saddle and Mount Mawenzi. You’ll arrive by early afternoon and begin preparing for your summit push. After an early dinner, get some rest—your summit attempt begins just after midnight. Your guide will review the plan and ensure you’re fully prepped for the challenge ahead.
Altitude: 4,750m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,100m
Distance: 15 km | Time: 12–14 hours
You’ll begin your summit push around midnight, slowly ascending through switchbacks to Gilman’s Point (5,681m). From there, continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—Africa’s highest point. Celebrate your achievement with photos and breathtaking sunrise views before descending to Barafu Camp for a brief rest and lunch. Then continue descending to Mweka Camp, where you’ll spend your final night on the mountain. Exhausted but accomplished, enjoy a warm meal and a deep rest.
Altitude: 3,100m to 1,800m
Distance: 10 km | Time: 3–4 hours
After breakfast, you’ll continue your descent through the lush rainforest. This final stretch is filled with birdsong and possibly sightings of colobus monkeys. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate. From there, a vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi. Enjoy a hot shower, a hearty meal, and celebrate the completion of your incredible journey to the top of Africa.
