The Marangu Route, affectionately known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only path up Mount Kilimanjaro that offers accommodation in mountain huts instead of camping in tents. This makes it especially appealing for climbers who seek the comfort of a mattress and shelter during their adventure. With its long-standing history and gentle trail, Marangu is also the most established route on the mountain.
This 5-day itinerary is the shortest route to the summit and back, following the same trail for both ascent and descent. While the terrain is less rugged compared to other routes, the limited duration offers less time for altitude acclimatization, making it a more demanding journey despite its technical ease.
Still, for seasoned trekkers or those confident in their ability to acclimatize quickly, the 5-day Marangu Route offers a scenic, efficient, and rewarding ascent to Uhuru Peak. You’ll journey through diverse landscapes—from lush rainforest to lunar-like alpine desert—culminating in a sunrise summit at Africa’s highest point.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where our friendly team will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi, the gateway to Kilimanjaro. In the evening, meet your mountain guide for a detailed climb briefing and gear check. Use this time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for your adventure. Overnight stay in Moshi.

Tulivu has always been in our hearts, even though opening a boutique hotel wasn’t something we initially envisioned. Our passion for hosting family and friends, creating unforgettable experiences, and sharing fine dining brought us so much joy over the years. Eventually, we realized this warmth and hospitality could be shared with others. That’s when the idea for Tulivu Kilimanjaro Retreat and Campsite was born.

Your journey begins at Marangu Gate, where you’ll complete registration with park authorities. The trail winds through lush rainforest, home to blue monkeys, towering fig trees, and colorful birdlife. The walk is serene, shaded, and gradually ascending. After about 4–5 hours, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut, nestled in a forest clearing. If you have energy, take a short hike to Maundi Crater for wide views across the plains. Dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut.
Leaving the forest behind, today you’ll hike into the moorland zone, where the vegetation thins and giant lobelias and groundsels dominate the landscape. The trail offers spectacular views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. As the altitude increases, you’ll be encouraged to walk slowly and drink plenty of water. Arrive at Horombo Hut for a warm meal, spectacular mountain views, and a cozy overnight in shared huts at 3,720 meters.
Today’s trek leads into the alpine desert, a dry and exposed region with sparse vegetation. The trail crosses the Saddle, a vast plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo, with wide open views and a hauntingly beautiful landscape. The hike is steady but challenging due to the altitude. Reach Kibo Hut by mid-afternoon, rest, and prepare your gear for the midnight summit attempt. After an early dinner, head to bed early for much-needed sleep before your push to the peak.
Rise just before midnight for your summit bid. The climb to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) is steep and challenging, traversing switchbacks in the dark. From here, continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa—as the sun rises. After taking in the views and snapping photos, begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a short break, then continue to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain. It’s a long, demanding day—pace yourself and stay strong.
After breakfast, begin your final descent through moorland and dense rainforest, watching the scenery change with every step. The trail becomes more vibrant and warm as you lose altitude. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, sign out and collect your summit certificate—a symbol of your achievement. Our team will drive you back to Moshi, where you’ll enjoy a celebratory dinner, a hot shower, and well-earned rest.
