7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route

7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek via Machame Route

The 7-day Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” it offers a varied and rewarding trek through five diverse ecological zones—from tropical rainforest to the glacier-capped summit. This route is well-suited for physically fit individuals seeking a more gradual and well-acclimatized ascent.

Unlike the 6-day version, the 7-day itinerary adds an acclimatization day, significantly improving summit success rates. Highlights include the dramatic Barranco Wall, vast Shira Plateau, and breathtaking Lava Tower. The route uses the Mweka descent path, allowing a circular journey up and down the mountain.

With expert guides, comfortable camps, and stunning scenery throughout, the Machame 7-day climb is a perfect blend of adventure, challenge, and natural wonder on Africa’s highest peak.

Trip Highlights

  • Summit the highest point in Africa—Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.
  • Hike the famous and scenic Barranco Wall.
  • Experience diverse landscapes from rainforest to glaciers.
  • Smart acclimatization with a full extra day for adaptation.
  • See incredible starry skies and sunrises above the clouds.
  • Climb with expert guides and supportive crew for a safe journey.

  • Altitude: 1,800m to 3,000m
  • Distance: 11 km | Time: 5–7 hours

Today begins with a drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. After registration, your trek starts through dense rainforest filled with ancient trees, mosses, and rare plants. You may spot monkeys, birds, and other forest wildlife as you gently climb the trail. The air is humid and the ground can be muddy, but the scenery is lush and captivating. As you gain altitude, the trees thin out. You’ll reach Machame Camp by late afternoon, where your tents and a hot meal await.

  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Meal Plan: Break Fast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Altitude: 3,000m to 3,850m
  • Distance: 5 km | Time: 4–6 hours

The trail begins with a steep ridge that transitions from forest to moorland. Today’s shorter distance allows you to climb slowly, helping with acclimatization. As you rise, enjoy stunning views of Kibo and the Shira Plateau. The trail passes through rocky terrain and low heather vegetation. By midday, you’ll arrive at Shira Camp on a high plateau with views of the mountain peaks and distant plains below. After lunch, you’ll rest and acclimate, with optional short walks around the plateau before dinner and an early night.

  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Meal Plan: Break Fast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Altitude: 3,850m to 4,630m (Lava Tower), then down to 3,976m
  • Distance: 10 km | Time: 6–8 hours

Today is critical for acclimatization. The trail ascends gradually across a rocky, barren landscape to Lava Tower at 4,630m. This is your first major altitude challenge and a great place for lunch. Afterward, you descend to Barranco Camp, allowing your body to adapt through the “climb high, sleep low” method. Along the way, enjoy incredible views of the Western Breach and Kibo Glacier. This long day ends at the scenic Barranco Valley, surrounded by towering cliffs and the iconic Barranco Wall you’ll tackle tomorrow.

  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Meal Plan: Break Fast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Altitude: 3,976m to 3,995m
  • Distance: 5 km | Time: 4–5 hours

Begin the day with an exhilarating scramble up the famous Barranco Wall. Though steep, it’s non-technical and one of the most fun sections of the trek. After reaching the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views of the Karanga Valley. The trail continues with several ascents and descents, crossing small streams and ridges. You’ll arrive at Karanga Camp by early afternoon, allowing time to rest and prepare for the higher elevations ahead. This camp is also important for acclimatization, positioned perfectly before the push to base camp.

  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Meal Plan: Break Fast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Altitude: 3,995m to 4,673m
  • Distance: 4 km | Time: 3–4 hours

Today’s trek is relatively short but steep. You’ll ascend through barren alpine desert terrain with strong winds and little vegetation. As you near Barafu Camp, the summit of Kibo looms large and intimidating. You’ll reach camp around midday and rest in preparation for summit night. After an early dinner, your guides will review the summit plan and give you time to rest. The air is thin, and it’s important to stay warm and hydrated. You’ll begin your final ascent around midnight.

  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Meal Plan: Break Fast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Altitude: 4,673m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,068m
  • Distance: 17 km | Time: 12–16 hours

The toughest and most rewarding day begins just after midnight. Climb through the cold and dark, passing Stella Point (5,756m) before reaching Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa. Watch the sunrise from the top of Kilimanjaro, a memory you’ll never forget. After photos and celebration, begin your descent back to Barafu, rest briefly, then continue down to Mweka Camp. The descent is hard on the knees, but the oxygen-rich air at lower altitude brings relief. Celebrate your accomplishment at camp with a warm meal.

  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Meal Plan: Break Fast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Altitude: 3,100m to 1,800m
  • Distance: 10 km | Time: 3–4 hours

The final leg of your trek takes you back through the lush rainforest, now familiar but even more beautiful after your summit success. The trail can be slippery, so take your time and use trekking poles. At Mweka Gate, you’ll sign out and receive your official summit certificate. Our team will be waiting to take you back to Moshi, where a hot shower, celebratory dinner, and a soft bed await. It’s time to rest and reflect on your incredible achievement.
