The 10-Day Northern Circuit Route with Crater Camp begins at Lemosho Gate and leads trekkers through one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and diverse paths. On the first day, you’ll hike through lush montane forest to reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, setting the tone for a remote and rewarding journey around the mountain’s northern slopes. This trail is celebrated not only for its stunning vistas and varied ecological zones but also for offering unmatched solitude and an exceptional acclimatization profile.
As the longest route on Kilimanjaro, the Northern Circuit allows you to circle nearly the entire mountain, moving from the western flank toward the remote northern wilderness. This gradual ascent provides ample time for your body to adjust to the altitude, dramatically improving summit success rates. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views stretching across both Tanzania and Kenya, with very few trekkers sharing the trail making it an intimate and peaceful high-altitude experience.
A unique highlight of this trek is the overnight stay at Crater Camp (5,790 meters), nestled just beneath the summit of Uhuru Peak. As one of the highest campsites on Earth, Crater Camp gives you the rare opportunity to explore the stunning Rebmann Glacier and the eerie Ash Pit inside the volcanic crater. Though this part of the trek demands resilience due to extreme altitude, it transforms a Kilimanjaro climb into an unforgettable expedition for seasoned adventurers.

Eventually, we realized this warmth and hospitality could be shared with others. That’s when the idea for Tulivu Kilimanjaro Retreat and Campsite was born.

Altitude: 2,360 m to 2,820 m
Distance: 6 km | Time: 3–4 hours
Begin your adventure at Lemosho Gate, where you’ll complete registration before continuing with a short drive to the trailhead. The trek kicks off through lush montane rainforest, alive with the sounds of colobus monkeys, tropical birds, and vibrant flora. The trail is well-shaded and climbs gradually, allowing for a smooth adjustment to the altitude. After 3–4 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp), set beneath towering trees. Settle in for your first night on Kilimanjaro with a warm meal and evening briefing.
Altitude: 2,650m to 3,610m
Distance: 8 km | Time: 5–6 hours
You’ll leave the forest zone and enter the heath and moorland landscape, characterized by volcanic rock, lobelias, and giant senecios. The trail ascends steadily with stunning views of Shira Ridge and Mount Meru in the distance. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp, set on the western side of the Shira Plateau. After lunch and some rest, you can take a short acclimatization hike nearby before settling in for dinner and an overnight stay under the crisp mountain air.
Altitude: 3,610m to 3,850m
Distance: 7 km | Time: 4–5 hours
This is a relatively short day to allow for acclimatization. Cross the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. The trail is gentle and offers incredible views of Kibo’s snow-capped peak. You may explore the Shira Cathedral for extra acclimatization and scenery. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp in the afternoon for rest, dinner, and overnight. Expect chilly temperatures and vast alpine views.
Altitude: 3,850m to 4,200m
Distance: 9 km | Time: 5–6 hours
Today is a scenic and peaceful trek heading north toward Moir Hut, a seldom-visited campsite at the base of Lava Tower. The trail climbs gradually with excellent views across the plateau. In the afternoon, you can take an optional acclimatization hike to the Lent Hills. This camp is extremely quiet, offering a special wilderness experience on Kilimanjaro. Perfect for rest and deepening your acclimatization.
Altitude: 4,200m to 4,020m
Distance: 12 km | Time: 5–7 hours
The trail rises steeply over a ridge before dropping into the remote northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. This portion of the trek is known for its solitude, with few trekkers and breathtaking vistas across the Kenyan plains. Continue along rolling terrain with gradual ascents and descents before arriving at Buffalo Camp. Enjoy the serenity and wild beauty of Kilimanjaro’s quietest side.
Altitude: 4,020m to 3,850m
Distance: 8 km | Time: 5–6 hours
Today’s trail traverses the northern side of the mountain, winding through alpine desert landscapes. It’s a relatively easy day in terms of terrain, allowing your body to further adjust to the altitude. You’ll enjoy views of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro’s second-highest summit. Arrive at Third Cave Camp for a restful evening under a sky full of stars.
Altitude: 3,850m to 4,800m
Distance: 6 km | Time: 4–5 hours
Climb gradually toward the high-altitude alpine zone. Today’s trail is steeper, with rocky terrain as you make your way to School Hut, the final staging point before your summit attempt. Arrive in the early afternoon to rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear. Early dinner and early bedtime are essential to conserve energy for the midnight ascent to the summit.
Altitude: 4,800m to 5,895m (Uhuru) to 5,790m
Distance: 6 km ascent, 1.5 km descent | Time: 8–10 hours
Wake before midnight to begin your summit push. The trail to Gilman’s Point is steep and demanding, with switchbacks over scree. From there, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking in the views, descend briefly into the Crater Camp, where you’ll spend a once-in-a-lifetime night surrounded by glaciers and near the Rebmann Glacier. Explore the crater floor and rest at high altitude.
Altitude: 5,790m to 3,100m
Distance: 12 km | Time: 6–7 hours
Descend steeply from Crater Camp back past Stella Point and down to Barafu Camp, where you’ll rest briefly. Continue the long descent through alpine desert and moorland to reach Mweka Camp in the forest zone. The increased oxygen and warmer air will feel refreshing. Celebrate your achievement over dinner and enjoy your final night on the mountain.
Altitude: 3,100m to 1,800m
Distance: 10 km | Time: 3–4 hours
Today you’ll complete your descent through the beautiful rainforest. The trail is often muddy but rewarding, with sightings of monkeys and lush scenery. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, receive your certificate of achievement and meet the vehicle waiting to take you back to Moshi. Enjoy a hot shower, a hearty meal, and well-earned rest at your lodge.

From start to finish, this was one of the most incredible and a life-changing experience.Climbing Kilimanjaro is no small undertaking, and the professionalism, knowledge, and preparation of this team were evident every single day. They were extraordinarily organized, safety-focused, and deeply experienced. I always felt supported and confident in their guidance. Their expertise on the mountain — from pacing and acclimatization to encouragement on summit night — made all the difference.Beyond their skill and professionalism, what truly sets this company apart is the people. The entire team was patient, kind, and unbelievably fun. They created an atmosphere of camaraderie and positivity that carried us through every challenge. There was constant encouragement, laughter, and genuine care. They were invested in our success and well-being in a way that went far beyond expectations.Martin leads an exceptional group. His integrity, leadership, and attention to detail are reflected in every member of the crew. You can tell this is not just a business...it’s something they deeply believe in.Whether you are planning to climb Kilimanjaro or go on safari in Tanzania, I would recommend Explore Trekking Adventures without hesitation. They will always be my go-to team in Tanzania. Five stars are not enough.Posted on Jessica RVerified January Mt. We were able to reach the summit of Kili via Umbwe in 6 days; each day was remarkable thanks to an exceptional support: porters, chef, waiter, qualified guides... It was a human adventure with a rigorous and experienced team whose only objective and to make you live a beautiful experience coaching, health monitoring, .... Martin’s strength, through his background in education around tourism in Tanzania is his ability to recruit the right people to form a Great Team that will do everything to allow you to achieve your dream, as a couple, with family or with friends, in a quality atmosphere, far from the expeditions punctuated by marketing. One team, One Dream! I never anticipated the depth of emotion I experienced during it, continue to feel upon my return, and will likely carry with me for years to come. To imagine such a rich and meaningful collection of experiences compressed into so few days is truly remarkable. The care, confidence, compassion, and competence of Martin and the ETA team were unmatched and absolutely vital to the success of our journey. This was a rare treasure of mind-expanding, challenging, joyful, interesting, and deeply humbling experiences—one I will forever be grateful for.Asante sana, Babu Simba.Posted on Jamie DeFVerified Life changing This adventure was truly life-changing. Martin and the ETA team have a rare gift for blending exceptional skill and safety with genuine heart. I owe every bit of my success to their encouragement, attention to comfort, constant presence, and joyful personalities. Their singing and dancing carried us through even the hardest moments. Reaching the peak was unforgettable, but it cannot compare to the love and sense of safety I felt from those who quite literally carried me there. I will hold this experience with me forever.Posted on Sophia BVerified Telling Everyone I Know about ETA One of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. Martin and his team were excellent, and I could not have successfully made it up the mountain without them (looking at you, Fred!). They provided not only support, but also delicious meals, safe lodging, and good vibes. Hakuna Matata.Posted on Lara PVerified A true gem in a touring company! I am very grateful to be able to join Martin and his team (Explore Trekking Adventures) now 2 years in a row! Their incredible team guided me and a group of medical professionals to a successful summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro on a medical education expedition. From start to finish, their level of safety, expertise, and thoughtful attention to detail was truly exceptional. As an ER physician, safety and preparation were paramount for our group. ETA's understanding of altitude physiology, acclimatization and route knowledge was impressive. They made sure to meticulously tracked each individual’s progress throughout the climb, adjusting pacing, rest and support to ensure that every member of our group had the best possible chance for a safe and successful summit. Martin and his team tailored this experience to our group. They are thoughtful, adaptive, and genuinely invested in their climbers’ well-being. For example, at altitude, many of our appetites understandably declined, and the team went to extraordinary lengths to make sure we were still properly nourished. One evening, they overheard us joking about craving pizza. To our absolute amazement, later that night our cook had prepared fresh pizza at altitude. They even made an impromptu cake when they discovered it was one of our members’ B day! That moment perfectly captured the heart of this group. The guides, cooks and every porter were outstanding. Their kindness, strength and pride in their work were evident every day. They functioned as a seamless team lifting us up both literally and figuratively. It is impossible to overstate how much their energy and encouragement contributed to our success.ETA gave us the preparation, confidence, and strength to make this climb a success. I trust them completely and feel so lucky to be able to work with this team. I will follow ETA to the ends of the earth and back!!Posted on Krishi KVerified One dream Great trip great team one dream nonstop to the top. Singing is especially memorable. Value safety, fun, summitting and amazing food.Posted on Valérie BVerified Unforgettable ascent How not to recommend E.T.A. who pampered us during our ascent of Kilimanjaro. ETA is a great team that houses us, feeds us, and guides us throughout the ascent. A discreet team of 47 people who we barely met while they were there so that everything was ready before we arrived on the base camps. Not to mention the small snacks with hot drinks that were offered to us during our trekking days.Success is due in part to the entire Martin team and its 47 porters. Thanks to ETA, we will all have an unforgettable memory of this adventure. Asante SanaPosted on Soline BVerified Hakuna Matata! An incredible and unprecedented experience! As president of the Kili Usher Association, Martin and his entire team took very seriously our project which was to accompany a group of 9 visually and hearing impaired.
